Do I love Rasteau?
Of course I do, and it shows when I drink it with such relish. Full,
generous and warm, but not overly so, aromatic and well-balanced – it has all
the delights in one! It is a true gourmet wine for “cheese and dessert”
allowing the hostess to serve blue cheese and ewe’s cheese nicely arranged on
a platter with grapes, dates, figs, walnuts and other nuts…
As well as a chocolate dessert, coffee tart or hazelnut ice-cream. You
can enjoy the end of the meal chatting over a little glass of Rasteau. It’s so
lovely that my friends are completely addicted to this ritual and would be
most disappointed if I deprived them of it. You can get into a glass of
Rasteau and set off round its beautiful unspoilt native land bathed in
sunshine but nice and peaceful. It’s a very affordable means of “transport”
with no carbon emissions.

Bernard Burtschy, distinguished member of the European Grand Jury and the
tasting committee of La Revue des Vins de France, is a committed lover of Cave
de Rasteau wines which, as he explained in a Paris Match article of February
2007 on truffles and the skills of the great chefs, he suggests as an
accompaniment, “…for instance, with a Cave de Rasteau Côtes-du-Rhône, red or
white depending on the meat or fish. Rasteau red in blends of grenache noir,
syrah and mourvèdre speak sweetly of spice and black fruit. The grenache
blanc, clairette and bourboulenc in Rasteau whites are fresh and lively with a
nice flintiness but fleshy enough to enrobe the Black Diamond…”
Rasteau is a unique place and the view of the Dentelles from the stony
vineyards is one of the best I know.
The wine is like the midday sun on the village square and the mid-August
festival when tourists go all round the village with a glass in their hand to
meet and chat with the winemakers: it’s all about enjoyment, relaxation and

I love Rasteau wines because they have personality and staying power; they are
so different, they go with my food; in the game and truffle seasons Rasteau
wine and my dishes make a perfect match. These wines are frank with lots of
character and satisfaction.
